Getting Better Gas Mileage

My truck tends to get about 17 MPG in my typical week. I tested this numerous times so it should be pretty accurate. With one of my last fill ups, I decided to try a few things. First, I put in some gas treatment before I filled up (a suggestion that Dan gave me). I then modified some of my driving habits, particularly trying to speed up slowly (keeping the RPMs lower). When I refilled the tank I calculated out my gas mileage and it was about 19.5 MPG. I would classify that as a pretty good improvement.

These changes amount to about 40 extra miles per tank and about $10 per refill (assuming $4 per gallon and adding 16 gallons of gas).

I am going to try and stick with these driving techniques...especially since the MPG that I get is already below 20.

Note - I am not taking this so far as to drive everyone behind me nuts by speeding up extremely slowly or merging in to traffic at a dangerous speed. Hypermiling is the proper term for some of that and I think some people take it too far. Hypermiling in and of itself is ok, but going to the extreme can be dangerous.

That is horrible gas mileage! But way to improve it! I'm trying to do the same :)
