Miscellaneous Sermons

I have been meaning to post about this for a while, but kept forgetting. Lately I have been downloading some sermons from iTunes. These weren't sermons from GCR, but were instead from Desiring God Radio (John Piper) and from North Point Ministries (Andy Stanley).

A message for primarily men from Desiring God Radio is here (you can listen to it or read the manuscript):
Adam, Where Are You?, Part 1
Adam, Where Are You?, Part 2

Another series that I found really good was by Andy Stanley:
North Point Ministries: Andy Stanley Podcast (may require iTunes).

The series that I particularly enjoyed of Andy Stanley's was the "It Came From Within" series which contained 5 different sermons. If any of you listen to these let me know what you thought. I am currently listening to Andy Stanley's "LO$T" series.

Day at the beach

Yesterday we had a BBQ after church at one of the local beaches. Then we had the opportunity to go out on the lake in Dan's boat (I believe it is his and his dad's...but for simplicity sake...Dan's boat). There were probably around 25 people who came out to the gathering. There was plenty of food and water to go around.

I never managed to get up on the wake board, but I had fun trying. Lance sure made it look easy! The water was actually pretty nice. My knee is a bit sore today and I think that was from trying to wake board. It was great to spend the day with friends at the lake and just relaxing in the sun. It's been a long time since I was out on the lake in a boat so I really enjoyed it. Maybe next time I will actually get up on the wake board! Topping it off with some ice cream on such a nice day was a great way to end the event too!

Thanks to Dan and Randi for organizing this for us...it was a lot of fun!

Getting Better Gas Mileage

My truck tends to get about 17 MPG in my typical week. I tested this numerous times so it should be pretty accurate. With one of my last fill ups, I decided to try a few things. First, I put in some gas treatment before I filled up (a suggestion that Dan gave me). I then modified some of my driving habits, particularly trying to speed up slowly (keeping the RPMs lower). When I refilled the tank I calculated out my gas mileage and it was about 19.5 MPG. I would classify that as a pretty good improvement.

These changes amount to about 40 extra miles per tank and about $10 per refill (assuming $4 per gallon and adding 16 gallons of gas).

I am going to try and stick with these driving techniques...especially since the MPG that I get is already below 20.

Note - I am not taking this so far as to drive everyone behind me nuts by speeding up extremely slowly or merging in to traffic at a dangerous speed. Hypermiling is the proper term for some of that and I think some people take it too far. Hypermiling in and of itself is ok, but going to the extreme can be dangerous.

Where did the last 2 weeks go?

I have thought about blogging a few times in the past few weeks, but I never got around to it...partially because I didn't seem to have much to say. I still don't have a lot to say, but I will blog/ramble on for a little while.

About 2 weeks ago I added a new page to my personal website, http://www.dustindefoe.com, that is for another outdoor game: Cornhole (or commonly known as a Bean Bag Toss). I put up instructions on how to make your own set, often one of the most requested features that people are looking for. I even had a little fun and created a 3D model of it using Google's free product, Google SketchUp. The most popular page on the site is definitly the Ladder Golf page which gets over 4 times the traffic from any other page on my site. Visit the site and take a look.

Bailey has recovered well after her surgery and has had her stiches removed with no issues. She is back to normal and full of energy.

I have been trying to follow a workout routine that the Snap Fitness site created for me. It definitly challenges me and that is good. My workout on Saturday has left my calves hurting but I see that as a good thing, not a bad thing. I have been able to stick to my schedule of working out 3 times a week so that is good.

We had 3 new people (one single male and one couple) at our cell group last night. It was great to meet them and get to know them better. We had 11 people at the group and 3 others were not there. We are finally getting to the point where it will soon be feasible to split into 2 groups and have enough people for both groups (a long time goal of ours).
